Assalamu'alaikum! My holiday is going to end in less than 2 weeks. Because of that, I've been watching lots of 'back to school' related videos on YouTube. That includes lots of lookbooks, DIYs and even school supply hauls. (Don't judge me, I was bored LOL.) One of the youtubers that I was watching said something that has inspired me to write this post.
"What we wear can affect how we behave."
How true is that statement? When I heard her say that I immediately thought of the way I normally dressed. I realized that I behaved much more modestly whenever I wore an abaya or even a maxi dress/skirt. Maybe other people can't tell the difference, but I can.
Another thing that she said was, "Wear whatever makes you happy and confident."
I half agree with that statement. I believe that as a Muslimah, I should wear whatever makes my Lord happy. When He is happy with me, I'll be happy. What type of clothing makes Him happy? Modest clothing, duh. I've been wearing the hijab since I was about 4 years old, when I started Nursery in Madrassah. Alhamdulillah. However, I still don't think I dress modestly enough to please my Lord. So I've made a decision.
I will start wearing maxi skirts/dresses and abayas full time. I will not wear pants unless truly necessary, like for any physical activities or camps, etc. Insya'Allah, I will stick to this dress code for the sake of pleasing my Lord.
I'm not trying to show anyone that I'm better than them or whatever. This is only a small step, in my opinion. According to Imam Shafi'e, the feet are also considered aurah (part of the body that should be covered) for women. Hence, I am supposed to wear socks whenever I step out of my house. But I'm guilty of not doing so because my mum never told me to do so until I was a lot older and I also have eczema on my feet. Whenever I see other Muslimahs wearing socks, I feel so much lower than them... I'm reminded that I have so much more to improve on.
So this is my first step. I want to dress modestly so that I will behave modestly. That would make my Lord happy and in turn make me happy. Insya'Allah! To whoever is reading this, Allah Hafiz!
